Zirconium diboride (ZrB2) is a covalent-bonded ultra high temperature ceramic (UHTC) with a hexagonal crystal structure. Due to high melting point (~ 3000°C), hardness (~ 20–25 GPa retained up to high temperatures) and elastic modulus (~ 440–460 GPa), good abrasion, and creep resistance, it is considered as the base material for a range of technological applications, such as furnace elements, high-temperature electrodes, rocket engines, thermal protection structures for space vehicles with temperature capabilities of more than 1800°C, and heavy duty wear applications. In addition to refractoriness, good thermal conductivity (> 50 W/m/K) , inertness to molten metals, good thermal shock resistance, and high electric conductivity(~ 105 S/cm) , allow shaping of ZrB2-based ceramics via EDM. This allows the shaping of ZrB2-based materials into complex structures.
